NYPD Releases Surveillance Of Bronx Carjacking Suspect

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police released surveillance video of a man they say carjacked a minivan with a little boy inside.

Investigators say the suspect jumped into a Honda Odyssey in the Bronx Saturday afternoon, then sped off with a 3-year-old in the back seat.

The boy's mother was double-parked with her engine running outside her flower shop on Jerome Avenue in Fordham. She went around to unstrap her child, but before she could, police said, the carjacker got behind the wheel.

A witness told 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon that the mother jumped in front of the car and screamed "stop," but the stranger sped away with child in tow, hitting the woman and a subway column.

"We heard a noise, we came outside, we saw cops all over," said witness Martin Larbee. "And they told us that the flower shop lady, Lucy, had been hit by a car."

"She was really in terrible pain. Her legs seemed to be broken or something," another witness said. "It's so sad to see these type of things happen. People just steal your vehicle, but she had the keys in the car and it was running at the time."

Police found the boy 45 minutes later, unharmed, in the minivan just blocks away. He was reunited with his mother at the hospital.

Police describe the suspect as a balding white or light-skinned Hispanic man between 55 and 60-years-old, wearing glasses and standing between 5'7" and 5'10" tall.

Anyone with information in regards to this robbery is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.

The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
