NYPD Prepares To Deploy World Trade Center Unit

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - The 9/11 memorial is set to open on the 10th anniversary of the deadly attacks and a special NYPD unit will be there to protect it.

Is there a greater terrorist threat to the new World Trade Center commercial buildings and the memorial in the aftermath of the killing of Osama Bin Laden by U.S. Navy SEALs?

"Well, of course. Just common sense dictates that we have to be concerned about a possible act of retaliation as far as the death of bin Laden is concerned," says police commissioner Ray Kelly.

Kelly says the special World Trade Center unit will begin deployment shortly.

"We are going to start training. They'll receive special training so our goal is to have them on board and begin training by mid July," says Kelly. "We have put in place the construct for a World Trade Center unit and we've actually put a command structure in place."

The unit will start with 200 specially trained cops and ramp up to 600 as more and more buildings open.

Kelly also noted that police cameras are being put in place at the memorial site.
