NYPD Officers Wound Man In The Bronx
NEW YORK (AP) -- An off-duty New York City correction officer was shot and wounded in the arm by police officers after he pointed a gun at them in the Bronx.
Police say the officers opened fire on 35-year-old Victor Hernandez after he ignored numerous orders to drop a gun early Saturday morning in the borough's Morrisania section.
The Rikers Island guard was hospitalized in stable condition and was arrested on charges of menacing and reckless endangerment.
The NYPD says the officers were not in uniform, but wore badges around their necks and identified themselves as police. Authorities say a 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
Correction department spokesman Stephen Morello says Hernandez, who joined the department in 2006, was suspended for 30 days without pay according to standard department procedure.
