NYPD To Help Haiti Improve Security
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police Commissioner Ray Kelly traveled to Haiti Monday to discuss the upcoming assignment of six NYPD officers to the country.
The arrangement, sponsored by the U.S. State Department, will send six Creole-speaking police officers to Port-Au-Prince later this month to help train and assist Haitian police to improve security following the catastrophic earthquake that hit the nation in January.
Kelly was scheduled to meet with Haitian President Rene Preval and other government officials to discuss American support in rebuilding Haiti's security situation.
Kelly has had previous experience working in Haiti. From 1994-1995, Kelly helped establish an interim police force in the country when he served as Director of International Police Monitors.
