NYPD: More Than 1K Motorcycles Seized Citywide So Far This Year
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD says it has seized more than 1,000 motorcycles so far in 2013 as part of its effort to crack down on reckless driving and other illegal motorcycle operations throughout New York City.
The NYPD released photos from their initiative after police said the driver of a SUV was chased and attacked Sunday by a large group of bikers on the Henry Hudson Parkway.
The group was in the city to take part in an unauthorized motorcycle rally in which hundreds of motorcyclists tried to get into Times Square, police said.
From the start of the year to Oct. 3, police said they have issued 5,498 summonses to bikers and seized 1,440 motorcycles, quads and dirt bikes, including 57 vehicles on Sunday, citywide.
Police have also made 437 arrests, including 187 for reckless endangerment or reckless driving. Other offenses include motorcyclists operating without a license or with a suspended license, without registration or insurance or with altered VINs or license plate violations, police said.
The NYPD said there has been 25 motorcycle-enforcement initiatives to deter and cite dangerous or illegal motorcycle activity, including the deployment of police helicopters that help inform ground units of problematic areas.
