NYPD Detective Pleads Not Guilty To Perjury In Connection With Drug Case
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Prosecutors say a New York City police detective lied about the lead-up to a substantial drug arrest, and his false testimony ultimately scuttled the case.
Detective Said Salim was released without bail Wednesday after pleading not guilty to perjury, official misconduct and other charges.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said Salim arrested two men in upper Manhattan in 2009 for carrying a bag full of cocaine, 1010 WINS reported.
Vance said Salim later testified under oath that he stopped the men because one of them looked like a confidential informant.
An investigation into the circumstances, however, revealed that the men were stopped and arrested without probable cause, and before the bag was unlawfully searched.
The DA's Office said video of the encounter conflicted with Salim's account at a grand jury and a hearing, where he denied having frisked the men.
Prosecutors ultimately concluded he had no legal basis for stopping the men, and the case was dismissed.
Defense lawyer Mark Bederow said Salim denies that intentionally giving any false testimony.
Salim has been suspended.
