NYPD Detective Fired After Allegedly Shooting Partner By Accident
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A veteran NYPD detective was fired Wednesday, about a month after authorities said he accidentally shot his partner in the wrist.
Detective Jay Poggi, a 31-year veteran of the NYPD who was assigned to the 75th Precinct in East New York, Brooklyn, has been terminated by the department, police confirmed Wednesday.
On April 24, Poggi, 58, was arrested on a drunk driving charge after authorities said he accidentally shot his partner, Detective Matthew Sullivan.
Poggi had taken out his revolver to show his partner the weapon's hammer when it discharged, authorities said. It happened inside a car in the Howard Beach neighborhood of Queens just after 3 a.m. April 24.
After the accidental shooting, Poggi drove Sullivan to Jamaica Hospital Center, where Sullivan underwent surgery, police said.
Prosecutors said Poggi was arrested after he failed a field sobriety test. They said he later refused to take a Breathalyzer test and has been suspended without pay.
Poggi was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court on June 16.
