NYPD Detective Charged With Perjury
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A New York City police detective was arrested and charged with perjury Tuesday, reportedly after he changed his testimony in the case against an alleged drug dealer.
Detective Abel Joseph, 39, was charged with two counts of first-degree perjury, police said.
Police did not provide further details. But a New York Daily News report said the case stemmed from Joseph's testimony about his arrest of an alleged PCP dealer in East Harlem in 2010.
Joseph allegedly told the grand jury he could never find the buyers the day he arrested the alleged drug dealer, Michael Butler, the newspaper reported. But he later claimed at a pre-trial hearing that he had questioned and searched the buyers, only to release them because they were not carrying any drugs, the newspaper reported.
There were also discrepancies over whether Joseph ever lost track of Butler before arresting him, the paper reported.
Butler ended up having the charges against him dismissed due to the conflicting testimony, the paper reported.
