NYPD Searches For Man Who They Say Crashed Stolen Cop Car

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD is searching for a man who they say stole a police car and crashed it into several other vehicles in the Bronx early Sunday morning.

The man stole a marked squad car with the keys left inside from the parking lot of the 50th precinct on Kingsbridge Avenue shortly before 6:30 a.m., according to authorities.

He drove the car down Sedgwick Avenue before crashing into four parked cars near Fordham Road, police said.

Surveillance video shows the man fleeing the scene.

"The guy jumped out of the police car, and I realized he's not a policeman," one witness, Deitra Guerrant, told CBS2's Brian Conybeare.

Residents woke up to find the cruiser and other cars smashed.

"I said, oh my god, he stole the police car, this is crazy," Guerrant said. "He took off running and he went down the corner, and that's the last we seen of him."

Vivian Lopez owns a red SUV that was totaled in the crash.

"Now I have no car to go to work or do anything," she said.

Another one of the car owners happened to be looking out the window as he got ready for work, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

"I see the guy, he comes out right here very fast, and I hear boom, boom!" he said.

No one was hurt, but the suspect is still on the run, police said.

"He hopped out of the car, walked down the block like nothing happened and caught a taxi," one witness told D'Auria.

He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweater and a black jacket.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS or by logging on to their website at www.NYPDcrimestoppers.com. Callers can remain anonymous.
