NYC's 'Condom Finder' App Now Available For Windows & BlackBerry Phones
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tuesday may be Valentine's Day, but New York City wants to remind you of another important holiday, which happens to fall on the same date.
February 14 is also National Condom Day and the Health Department is launching a NYC Condom mobile-enabled website so more New Yorkers can use their phones to find free condoms and access information about sexual health.
The Health Department had developed an app that worked with Android and Apple iPhones. The application will now also be available for Windows and BlackBerry phones.
The app works by using GPS technology or manual address input to determine the five closest NYC Condom distribution venues.
Since last year's launch, the NYC Condom Finder has been downloaded more than 25,000 times.
"New Yorkers are mobile, so we need to reach them both with sexual health information and easy access to service information wherever they are," said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley.
The Health Department's Dr. Monica Sweeney told 1010 WINS that there is also plenty of other information through the app and that such easy access is critical.
"The need is there -- not only from the number of people that download it -- but because we continue to have new HIV, especially with men who have sex with men and unplanned, unwanted pregnancies and other STDs. As long as we do, we need to do more," Sweeney said.
