Jennifer Appel left the Magnolia Bakery to start Buttercup Bake Shop in 1999. While this pretty East Side bakery has legions of cupcake fans, it's Peach Pandowdy, Lime with Gingersnap Crust and Chocolate Pudding with Graham Cracker Crust pies are all full of good old-fashioned flavors.

This cozy pie shop was was renovated to reveal the original tin ceiling and walls. Their pies are just as authentic--they buy ingredients according to season and preserve summer fruits to use all year round in pies like Fig Plum Crumble and Strawberry Nectarine. First Prize doesn't have a storefront, but they are available online and at the Market Share table at the Brooklyn Flea's Smorgasboard on Saturdays. They use organic and local ingredients to create pies like Rhubarb Frangipane, Apple Cider Cream and Root Beer Float.

It's worth a trip out to Red Hood to this luscious bakery for a slice of Peaches and Dream. Their current menu features Butterscotch and Lemon Almond Meringue tarts as well as Chocolate Bourbon Pie and the classic Pumpkin--made with a whole wheat crust.
