NEW YORK -- It's expected to be the hottest day of the year so far in New York City, as the area hits another heat wave Tuesday.

The First Alert Weather team has issued a Red Alert through Wednesday due to excessive heat and humidity, along with the risk of severe thunderstorms.

A heat advisory has been issued through Wednesday for most of the area. Feels-like temperatures will be around 95 to 105 degrees.

An excessive heat warning has also been issued through Wednesday for central and southern New Jersey, where feels-like temperatures will be around 100 to 110 degrees.

Finally, an air quality alert will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday for most of the area due to ground level ozone.

We cracked 90 degrees again Monday, with feels-like temperatures reaching the century mark in and around the city. Tuesday won't be much different, with highs in the mid-90s and peak heat indices in excess of 100, making it one of the hottest – if not the hottest – days of the season thus far.

That said, the National Weather Service has allowed the heat advisories and excessive heat warnings to remain in effect.

Regarding the active weather, a strong storm or two can't be ruled out Tuesday afternoon, but it still looks like the most threatening storms don't arrive until late in the afternoon and evening. They may very well pack a punch - capable of producing downpours, localized flooding, damaging winds and even some hail.

The threat of severe thunderstorms should dwindle after sunset, with just a stray shower overnight.

Wednesday will be another hot one, though it may not be quite as hot. Nevertheless, heat indices will make a run for the century mark again, with some higher values expected inland. And once again, we'll see a round of showers and thunderstorms push through, some of which could be severe.

Thursday offers some hope with umbrellas in the morning, then decreasing humidity and shades by the afternoon.
