NYC Style: Writer/Fashionista Rebecca Jaycox
By Kimberly Rae Miller
Name: Rebecca Jaycox
Borough/Neighborhood: Astoria, Queens
Profession: Young Adult Fantasy Writer
Brief Bio:
Rebecca Jaycox moved to New York City from St. Louis five years ago. She now lives in Astoria with her scientist boyfriend and writes young adult fantasy and urban fantasy fiction. Writing isn't her only creative outlet, when she's not writing; she's enjoying the many shopping opportunities New York City has to offer.
My personal style:
I like to mix trendy items with classic pieces, but I also love retro looks. Dresses in styles from the 40s, 50s and 60s always hold a special place in my heart. A lot of people tell me I look hippy chic. I wanted to own Audrey Hepburn's wardrobe in Breakfast at Tiffany's, but I'm not quite waifish enough to pull it off. And I love a good pair of jeans. Pair a fantastic pair of jeans with a slinky shirt and fun heels, and I'm good to go.
Favorite item in my closet:
Green, knee length leather jacket with double breasted brass buttons from Adrienne Vittadini. It was the best buy I have ever found, and it's gorgeous.
Are there any trends you wish would go away already?
80s cropped shirts and bright colored jeans, it looks like Punky Brewster is trying to make a comeback. Also, anything that looks like it belonged in a Madonna movie from the 80s.
Trends you think you might bring back:
Not so much a trend, but as much as I love casual, sometimes I think we've gotten too casual. I see people wearing tights with tee shirts in the street, believing that no one will notice they're not leggings. We notice.
Favorite Five: What are your favorite stores in any of the five boroughs (to buy make-up, or fashion)?
The Blooming Company is a little boutique in my neighborhood that offers original, well-made clothing by small, independent designers. They also sell handbags and jewelry and unique items for the home. When I want to find that special dress or a gift for a friend, I usually go there. I also love Zara. I'm on the slender size so the European cuts work really well, plus, they copy runway looks at prices that I can actually I afford. When I want something a little funkier, I check out Mango, Zara's cousin. And yes, I do frequent H&M. If you want a cute cocktail dress at a decent price or that trendy piece you know you'll never wear next year, you can't beat H&M. Although I often go to Sephora for my Bare Mineral needs, I'm in love with the lip glosses and lipsticks at MAC. They look good and feel good going on.
