NYC Officials Urge Surrender Of Illegal Weapons; Seek Citywide Gun Recovery
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - In the wake of the horror in Newtown, Connecticut, elected officials and religious leaders in New York City are calling for people to turn in their illegal guns and they also want a citywide gun recovery initiative.

They stood on the City Hall steps asking people with illegal guns to turn them in.
"Those that are out there, if you have a gun, if you hand it in at the precinct right now, you get a hundred dollars," Councilmember Robert Jackson, who was joined by other members of the Council and members of the clergy, said Tuesday.
But he acknowledged that not everybody with a gun wants to walk into a precinct.
"If you are afraid, put it in a paper bag. Call me up. I'll come and get it, and give you the hundred dollars back," Jackson said.
The councilmembers want the frequency of formal gun buyback programs to increase and are asking the private sector to fund a hike in the cash reward.
