NYC Food Truck Lunch: Chipotle Fried Chicken From The V Spot

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

A couple of years ago, a Vietnamese food truck opened for business, and we enjoyed their pork patty over rice for lunch. At a certain point, they stopped coming around, and we figured they went to the great food truck graveyard in the sky.

But no! The V Spot has returned, and we stopped by recently for another visit. This time we opted for a rice bowl of chipotle fried chicken for $9. You can also get it on a baguette for $10. Here's the menu.

The chicken was breaded and fried with a panko crust. In this case, the panko bread crumbs gave the crust a nice crunchiness.

They used mainly chicken breast, which we prefer, although there are plenty of people who say chicken thighs have more flavor. We've always been more of a chicken breast person.

Topping the chicken was fried cheese (unusual for an Asian dish) and sriracha mayo. Between the sriracha mayo and hot sauce, the dish had a little kick, but not too much where it overpowered the food.

There were two small side dishes included with lunch. The pickled carrots were limp, but the purple slaw made with red cabbage and a creamy slaw dressing was crispy and refreshing. That's not something we often say about cabbage.

The white rice was jasmine rice, which has smaller grains and is a little more delicate than your standard white rice.

Overall, we really liked lunch. Fried chicken is a particular favorite of ours, and using panko bread crumbs and sriracha mayo gave lunch a uniqueness particular to the V Spot.  A couple of the smaller pieces of chicken were a little dry, but the larger pieces of chicken breast were perfectly done.

Whether you go for the pork patty, chipotle fried chicken, or the lemongrass grilled chicken (which we haven't tried yet), you will get a lunch that's a little different from the other NYC food trucks, and we mean that in the best way possible!
