NYC Food Truck Lunch: White Shakshuka From The Shuka Truck
Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.
Do you know what shakshuka is? The Shuka Truck, which is a couple of months old, is the only food truck in NYC that serves this dish.
Shakshuka is an Israeli dish of eggs poached in tomato sauce and spiced with harissa and various other herbs, spices and ingredients, depending upon the version. They offer a red, green and white version, or you can create your own shakshuka choosing from their ingredients.
Sandwiches are $9-10 and platters, which include a side dish and challah bread, are $12.
We ordered the white shakshuka because it included blue cheese, one of our favorites. The poached eggs were also topped with caramelized onions, smoked eggplant, two kinds of mushrooms, spinach, oregano and thyme.
We're big egg lovers to begin with, and including all those toppings made this lunch even better. There was a certain amount of spiciness in the dish, which we assume was from the harissa, but it was not overly spicy. The other ingredients, such as blue cheese and caramelized onions, were strong enough to compete with the harissa.
Even though it was brutally cold outside and we had to bring lunch back to the office, there was still a little bit of soft yolk to be found in one of the eggs.
After all the eggs were eaten, we still had a tasty sauce for dipping the challah bread, not to mention a nice salad to wash it all down.
They offer an Israeli salad (mainly cucumbers and tomatoes), but we went for the Farmer's salad. It had goat cheese, chickpeas, red onions, baby spinach, cucumbers, herbs, and a vinaigrette dressing, and none of those pesky tomatoes that we don't care for.
The Shuka truck is organic, vegetarian and kosher, if that matters to you, but with the emphasis on eggs, definitely not vegan. We had an enjoyable lunch from the Shuka Truck, and recommend that you give them a try, too.
You can find the Shuka Truck on Twitter here, on Facebook here, and the menu is here.
