NYC Food Truck Lunch: Cod Schnitzel Platter From Schnitzel & Things

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

The very first food truck we went to many years ago was Schnitzel & Things. Great to see they are still in business, but it's been way too long since we checked in. With the cold weather starting to kick in, a nice fried schnitzel was just the ticket.

The traditional wiener schnitzel (veal cutlet) is too expensive a cut of meat for everyday lunch, so you won't see it on the truck's menu, but they do great chicken and pork schnitzels. We went for one of the less traditional dishes, a cod schnitzel platter for $10. (For vegetarians, they also have eggplant schnitzel.) You can get any of these dishes as a sandwich for a couple of bucks less.

Platters come with two side dishes and a condiment. There are 7 side dishes to choose from and 5 condiments (in addition to ketchup, mustard and mayo).

The cod consisted of two larger pieces and one smaller piece of fish, with a wedge of lemon included. The fish was not made in the traditional sense of a schnitzel, which is to pound meat, bread it and fry it. If you pound cod, it will turn into mush. However, they have the breaded and fried part of it down.

There are few lunches we like more than fried fish, and the cod schnitzel from Schnitel & Things is one of the best fried fish dishes to be found on the street. It was piping hot, with flaky cod encased in a golden, deep-fried crust. But the fish was not oily or greasy at all.

The side dishes at Schnitzel & Things are worth getting, too. The cucumber salad is cool and refreshing, and the beet & feta salad was a revelation. It revealed that we like beets when done right.

You can find the Schnitzel & Things truck on Twitter here, on Facebook here, and their website is here.

If you've had the pork or chicken schnitzel, you might want to try the cod or eggplant schnitzel for something a little different. If you haven't tried the pork or chicken schnitzel from Schnitzel & Things…what are you waiting for!
