Motorists would first set up an account and then use an app or text message to enter the meter number and specify how much time you need.
The system will also alert motorists when their time is up so they could purchase more and avoid a ticket.
The city hopes to roll out the system at 300 spots by the spring.
Following the pilot program, the Department of Transportation will determine whether to implement the system citywide.
The pay-by-phone system is already in use in Washington and Atlanta.
