DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan said that over the past five years, seven cyclists have been killed by being doored - being hit by or hitting a suddenly opened vehicle door.
Now, all 13,000 plus yellow taxis will have stickers about the door handle, warning passengers to look before swinging that door.
"And if you're taking out your date, that's great. If you're taking out your family, that's great. But don't take out a cyclist while you're doing that," Sadik-Khan told reporters on Tuesday. "Look over your shoulder and look before you open that door."
Taxi and Limousine Commissioner David Yassky said it only takes a second.
"An instant of caution on behalf of the passenger can save lives," he said.

In addition to the stickers, there will be messages displayed on the cabs' video screens.
This campaign comes on the heels of last week's unveiling of a similar campaign for pedestrians crossing city streets.
