NYC Clerk Prepares Gender-Neutral Marriage Forms For Possible Gay Marriage Legalization
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York's city clerk was getting ready for the possible legalization of gay marriage.
City Clerk Michael McSweeney said he is proof-reading new, gender-neutral forms for marriage license applications.
The current form asks for one bride's name and one groom's name. The gender-neutral versions would allow each person to choose whether he or she is a bride, groom or spouse.
McSweeney says if the law passes, security will be prepared for additional visitors to the office. And he says the new forms will be placed on a rush order to make sure they're ready in time.
The New York State Assembly passed a measure Wednesday that would legalize gay marriage in the state. It's not clear when and if the Senate will vote on it.
Is it prudent for McSweeney to prepare these new forms ahead of an actual vote? Sound off in our comments section below…
