NYC Cat Adoption Event Draws Over 2,000; 125 Cats Find Homes

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Pet-seeking New Yorkers gathered at "Whiskers In Wonderland," a Manhattan event which featured more than 400 cats from over 30 New York-area rescue groups.

Almost 2,000 people streamed through Manhattan's Metropolitan Pavilion and 125 cats, 7 rabbits, one snake were adopted on the spot with about 50 applications for cat adoptions to take place later this week, according to Jane Hoffman, President of the Mayor's Alliance for New York City's Animals , which co-sponsored the event along with Best Friends Animal Society.

"Forty cats from AC&C of NYC went home with new families and the five from AC&C who did not get adopted hitched a ride back to ASPCA to get a second shot at their adoption center on East 92nd Street," says Hoffman.

Among the other rescue groups involved, were the Urban Cat League, Animal Relief Fund of the Hampton, Kitty Kind, Liberty Humane Society, Anjellicle Cats and Rabbit Rescue & Rehab.

Best Friends celebrity Ambassador, actor Kevin Conway stopped by, as did Cat Fanciers Association Vice President and All-Breed Judge Joan Miller.  "Our mission statement includes the enhancement and well being of all cats," said Miller. "We're really concerned about feral cats, random bred cats and shelter cats".
