NEW YORK -- A power outage in Brooklyn left thousands of customers in the dark Thursday morning.

Con Edison said a truck carrying dumpsters took down overhead wires around 7:45 a.m. Thursday in East Flatbush.

The outage impacted 9,735 customers in the Flatbush and East Flatbush neighborhoods. Service was restored around 11 a.m., the utility said.

"A loud explosion, and nobody had power in the neighborhood," one business owner said. "Trying to make it work the best we could."

Street lights were also knocked out, and people had to be rescued from an elevator inside at least one building.

Con Ed customers are encouraged to report any outages and check out its outage map here.
