NYC Bike Share Program Faces Questions
NEW YORK (AP) -- Some community leaders are questioning plans for a bicycle-sharing system in New York City.
One of the two companies vying for the contract is having financial problems with its system in Montreal. The government there has given the company $108 million in financing to save the program.
Sean Sweeney, who heads the landmarks committee for New York's Community Board 2, said he is worried that the kiosks and bicycle parking stands will clog up narrow sidewalks in SoHo.
In addition, the New York Times reports some of the most experienced companies have decided not to bid for the program.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration wants to launch a test program with 30 stations later this summer. It eventually wants 10,000 bicycles available for lending 24 hours a day at 600 stations.
