NYC Bids To Host 2016 Democratic National Convention At Barclays Center

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City has submitted a bid to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, Mayor Bill de Blasio, who lives not far from the Barclays Center, presented the bid to the DNC.

He promised the progressive spirit of New York would energize and captivate the party and the nation.

Ed Powers, a Democrat, was certainly intrigued by the idea.

"Well, prestige for one thing. Emphasizing the strength of the Democratic party and providing lots of economic
development," he said.

Powers was an elected delegate when Bill Clinton accepted the nomination at Madison Square Garden. Hillary Clinton could well follow in his footsteps at the Barclays, Diamond reported.

"(Wouldn't that be fun?) Yeah. That'd be fantastic."

New York was among 15 cities invited to submit bids.

Philadelphia, Atlanta and Columbus, Oh. are among those also in the running.
