New York City To Receive Nearly $260 Million In Federal Anti-Terrorism Grants
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City will be the beneficiary of hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants for anti-terrorism efforts, U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) announced Tuesday.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has supplied $180,926,000 for Fiscal Year 2015 funding for the New York City area, through the Urban Areas Security Initiative, the senators announced. The initiative provides funding to address the needs of high-threat, high-density urban areas.
The funds will help the city prevent, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism.
Schumer and Gillibrand also announced a grant of $76,949,000 in funds from the State Homeland Security Program, also intended to prevent and respond to acts of terrorism and other catastrophes.
"We all know that New York City remains one of the top terrorist targets and this increase in funding will help better protect our city," Schumer said in a news release. "I am pleased that the Department of Homeland Security has recognized the importance of this investment."
"New York City remains the top terror target in the nation and we must continue to be vigilant in investing federal resources to keep us safe," Gillibrand added in the release. "Maintaining these critical anti-terror funds will help arm law enforcement with the necessary resources needed to protect New York families."
The Department of Homeland Security provided New York City with more funds for antiterrorism efforts this year than last, the senators said.
