NY Schoolteacher Helps Haitian Community Rebuild
SOMERS, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- An orphanage in Haiti has a reason to be thankful this holiday, as it thrives thanks to the work of a Westchester County schoolteacher.
Cholera has been kept at bay in Arcahaie, about 45 minutes north of Port-Au-Prince, reports WCBS 880's Sean Adams.
"We're very fortunate that we can have this, like I said, an oasis in the middle of a lot of this chaos," Roger Garrison said.

Since the devastating earthquake in Haiti at the Tree of Life orphanage, a school has been built and a new water pump supplies the village. The milestones were achieved in part because of the fundraising done by Garrison, from Somers.
"Schooling costs so much, to have the teachers and everybody needs raises, and we'd like to include other people in the town – so our needs keep growing," Garrison said.
Garrison said the fundraising will continue in hopes of helping to bring basic services the children struggling to survive in the tattered country.
