NY Businesses Going Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness Month
NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many people buy pink to help support the cause – but do you know which products pack the most powerful punch?
Get ready to see lots of pink starting on Friday. More companies than ever are coming up with products to help raise money for the countless charities, reports CBS 2's Cindy Hsu.
"You've got Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Breast Cancer Research Fund, Look Good Feel Better, Living Beyond Breast Cancer," Carin Gorrell, of Self Magazine, said.
Self Magazine came up with the famous pink ribbon years ago, and Gorrell said along with the huge range of products comes a huge range in terms of how much of your money goes to charity.
For some products, 100 percent of your money is donated, while for others it can be less than 10 percent. So how do you know?
"Often you can just tell by looking at the product, it will say one percent, 50 percent, 100 percent of the proceeds go to whichever breast cancer organization," Gorrell said. "You can also go online to the company's website and find out."
Several local restaurants, like Landmarc in TriBeCa, are also thinking pink. They're using special items on their menu, like cotton candy, to help raise money.
The treat is normally given to kids in the restaurant, but for one month, it's a fun way to fundraise.
"We're going to be offering our cotton candy for $1," Landmarc's Mollie Ward said. "We usually offer it for free, which gives guests an opportunity to donate to the American Cancer Society the whole month of October."
It's a sweet way to fight cancer.
