NY Attorney General Orders Hempstead Schools To Open Their Doors To Immigrant Students
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Immigrant students must be enrolled in the Hempstead School District, according to an order by the attorney general.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, the Hempstead School District has been under investigation after a report surfaced last year that it had turned away dozens of immigrant children, claiming there was no space for them to get an education.
Now, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has ordered the district to open its door to immigrant children.

"Children who have or do not have parents or other caretakers have been turned away in many cases by some school districts around the state of New York. It's illegal, it's discrimination
Federal law states it doesn't matter if a child is a citizen or not, they have to be allowed to get an education.
Newsday reports the school board president said he will comply with the order.
