Not So Fast: Bronx Residents Want 'Slow Zones' Set Up On Side Streets Near Highways
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Drivers making hasty decisions in an effort to avoid traffic are taking to local roads, but not everyone is happy with their choice to take the road less traveled.
"People, they fly through here like it's, it's the highway," Co-Op City resident Daniel Diaz told CBS 2's Lou Young on Friday.
The "bypass" traffic appears like a force of nature. Drivers move from congested highways to residential roads that are lined with homes.
"You're scared to cross the street with kids, because they just race, you know? We really need speed bumps," Lucy Diaz said.
Community members have submitted a request for those speed bumps to be placed around streets connecting the Hutchinson River and Pelham Parkways to create a "slow zone." If approved this would add the area to the existing 14 Zone program.
"They're coming through this neighborhood at a high rate of speed. We've gotten complaints about it. We're trying to slow down this traffic," Northwest Bronx Association spokesman Vincent Prezioso told CBS 2.
The Department of Transportation said that it plans to select a new set of slow zones in the fall.
