Nonunion JFK Airport Security Workers Vote To Authorize Strike
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A decision taken by a group of security guards at John F. Kennedy Airport could complicate matters for the holiday travel season.
The security workers, employed by Air Serv, authorized a strike for Thursday, December 20 if the company doesn't respond to its concerns.
The main points of contention for the nonunion workers include better training and equipment, which they say are related to safety concerns for passengers and themselves.
Another group of security workers, employed by Global Elite, will vote to authorize a strike on Friday, according to a news release.
"The security of the traveling public is very important to me," Shah Rahman, an Air Serv security officer said in a news release. "That's why my coworkers and me have been telling Air Serv about problems we've encountered on the job. We submitted petitions. Air Serv instead is trying to silence us. We refuse to be threatened. We won't be silenced."
