Nonprofit Holds First Pride Event For Transgender Community
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Community Healthcare network held its first LGBT Pride event for the transgender community Sunday in Astoria, Queens.
The event was held Sunday afternoon and evening at the Elixir Bar and Lounge, at 43-03 Broadway in Queens. The festival featured music, live performances, food, drinks, dancing and awards, according to a news release.
In announcing the event, the nonprofit said people who identify as transgender have faced bias and discrimination in seeking medical services.
The event was geared toward eliminating biases by bringing people together so they could learn and socialize, as well as celebrate the New York City transgender community culture.
The Community Healthcare network is a nonprofit that operates 11 health care centers for uninsured and underinsured New Yorkers.
