Noisy Parties Prompt Local Residents To Bill NYC Hotel For Lost Sleep
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A noisy neighbor is driving residents to desperate measures. They say the offender won't shut up, so it ought to pay up.
The swanky Gansevoort Park Avenue hotel has been getting on many neighbors' nerves since it opened in 2010.
"It's terrible. It's just so loud -- it's like they're having a party out on the street," one resident told CBS 2's Tony Aiello on Monday.
Revelers are sometimes rowdy on 29th Street after the hotel nightclub closes and often are noisy in the rooftop pool during summer Sunday parties, Aiello reported.
"It's a pain, it's a nuisance, but it's not horrible," said another.
"These kids come 11, 12 at night and they leave at 2, 3 in the morning -- the taxis are picking them up and there's a lot of noise going on," said Murray Hill resident John Finelli.
Leslie Hendrix said the honking cars stretch for blocks down 29th Street.
"People forget that this is a residential neighborhood and people need to sleep and live their lives and be able to work during the day without being exhausted," Hendrix said.
Out of sleepless frustration, a number of residents of the building across from the hotel have gotten creative.
Six of them sent the Gansevoort bills for lost sleep - a $1,000 for each noisy hour - adding up to $21,000 for the night of April 13.
"If they can get it -- it's good for them," Finelli said.
"The hotel keeps making promises, says 'yes yes yes, we'll remedy the problem' and then it's not remedied," said Hendrix.
No one expects the hotel to pay up, but they hope the hotel will pay attention. The hotel owner did not answer phone and email requests for comment.
Residents worry the noise will only get worse with at least three other hotel developments planned near 29th and Park Avenue.
