'It Smells Like Porta Potties:' Commuters Say Smelly Liquid Spewing From NJT Trains
PEARL RIVER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Commuters in Pearl River are complaining about a smelly liquid spewing from the NJ TRANSIT trains.
"Basically when the train comes pulling in here, you just see a constant stream of water coming from the first car, which is where the restroom is. It reminds me of summers on the farm at my uncle's dairy farm," one commuter told WCBS 880's Sean Adams. "It smells like porta potties."
New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection approved the leaking liquid, and a transit spokesperson told The Journal News that it poses no health risk to the public. The spokesperson said it is treated water, not raw sewage.
But that comes as little comfort for some commuters.
"Even if it's treated water, it's still a quality of life issue," one said. "I mean people standing here on the platforms are almost overcome with the fumes."
People in Pearl River say they plan to monitor the situation and ask commuter advocates to make a stink about the stink.
