Man Dead After NJ TRANSIT Train Hits Car In Emerson
EMERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man was killed Thursday morning when his car was hit by a NJ TRANSIT train in Emerson.
It happened near the Westwood station just west of the Lincoln Boulevard crossing and not at a grade crossing, NJ TRANSIT said.
NJ TRANSIT spokeswoman Jennifer Nelson said the preliminary investigation shows the driver, who was approximately in his late 80s, got on the tracks at the First Street crossing and drove along the tracks.
The train had left Spring Valley, New York at 5:10 a.m. when it hit the car, which then burst into flames.

There were 110 passengers on the train at the time, but no one on the train was hurt, NJ TRANSIT said. The passengers were taken off the train and brought to a nearby Stop and Shop parking lot, where they got on buses.
Service on the Pascack Valley Line has resumed after being suspended for a time in both directions. NJ TRANSIT was cross-honoring tickets.
Service was suspended earlier Thursday morning on the Gladstone Line because of a downed power line, but it has since been restored.
