NJ Woman Fatally Struck By Train After Falling On Tracks
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A woman was struck and killed by a train when she fell onto the tacks at a northern New Jersey train station, according to authorities.
NJ TRANSIT says the death of 47-year-old Sherylynn Barta, of Mendham, was ruled an accident.
Officials say the train's engineer saw Barta stumble from the platform at the Morristown station around 2 a.m. Saturday, though it's still not clear what caused her to fall.
The engineer sounded the horn and applied the train's emergency brake, but could not stop in time. Authorities say the eastbound train was not taking customers at the time and was headed to a rail yard.
Barta was with a man at the time the accident occurred. He was not injured in the incident.
