NJ Transit Train Strikes, Kills Man
BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey Transit officials have identified the man who was struck and killed by a passenger train in central New Jersey this weekend.
NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel said 47-year-old John Kardos of Bound Brook walked onto the tracks in Bridgewater around 4:20 p.m. Saturday, just as the westbound Raritan Valley line train passed under Interstate 287.
The engineer sounded a warning horn and applied the train's emergency breaking system, but the train could not stop in time.
Stessel said the Raritan-bound train had left Newark about 40 minutes before the accident, adding that no one on board was injured.
It was not immediately known why Kardos walked onto the tracks, and Stessel said the area where he was killed is not near a crossing or station.
