NJ Transit Train Strikes, Kills Man
PATERSON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey Transit says a Paterson man sitting on the tracks in northern New Jersey was struck and killed by a passenger train.
Mark Popewiny, who would have turned 47 on Monday, was hit around 10 p.m. Saturday, just west of the Paterson station on the Main Line. That's not far from where another man was killed by a train in a similar incident last week.
NJ Transit spokeswoman Penny Bassett Hackett said the engineer sounded a warning horn and applied the train's emergency breaking system. But Popewiny didn't move, and the train could not stop in time.
The westbound 1735 Main Line train had about 75 passengers onboard at the time, but no injuries were reported. They were transported to another train about an hour later.
NJ Transit police are investigating the accident, which marks the 21st train fatality this year.
