No NJ TRANSIT Deal Yet, Meetings With Workers To Continue Monday

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP)-- There is no deal yet between NJ TRANSIT and workers, but there might be reason to hope.

"Progress was made. Both sides presented a couple of new ideas," Steven Burkert, spokesman for labor, told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell.

Burkert said he would not devulge exactly what was discussed and he wouldn't say how the talks might impact the likelihood of a work strike.

"The tone is always civil. These are not animated or heated discussions," he said.

The key issues are wages and health coverage. A statement from the NJ TRANSIT said talks will continue on Monday.

A strike deadline has been set for next weekend.

NJ Transit officials outlined a contingency plan Thursday that projected that fewer than four in 10 rail riders would be accommodate by other forms of mass transit.

About 105,000 people ride trains into New York from New Jersey each weekday, either on NJ Transit or on NJ Transit connecting with PATH trains run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
