NJ TRANSIT Sandy Cost: Nearly $400 Million For Repairs, Replacements
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - NJ TRANSIT took a beating during superstorm Sandy and now we know what it cost the agency - nearly $400 million.
That includes more than $100 million for waterlogged trains and rail equipment.
NJT came under fire for leaving trains in rail yards prone to flooding and, in total, 62 locomotives and 261 rail cars were damaged.
Plus more than 630 trees had to be removed from tracks.
Jim Weinstein, NJ TRANSIT's Executive Director, said that, on top of the $400 million in repair and replacement costs, they will have to spend another $800 million to be better ready for another storm like Sandy.
Those numbers were released during a hearing on Capitol Hill earlier Thursday.
As of Monday, all of NJ TRANSIT's rail branches were back in service.
