NJ TRANSIT Takes Steps To Secure Positive Train Control System
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- NJ TRANSIT approved its operating budget and capital program on Wednesday, which include funding to complete its commitment to installing a positive train control system.
The board approved a $2.11 billion operating budget and $1.68 billion capital program for the 2017 fiscal year.
It also voted to secure the final piece of equipment it needs to install the automatic train braking system.
NJ TRANSIT will lease the radio frequency spectrum from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for 50 years.
The agency said it is on track to install the system by its 2018 federal deadline.
Newly appointed NJ Transit executive Steve Santoro said acquiring the radio frequency spectrum "was one of the larger hurdles which we have now crossed.''
The agency has been criticized for not having a positive train control system, particularly in light of last month's deadly Hoboken Terminal crash.
The board allocated another $125 million toward other track and bridge improvements.
