NJ TRANSIT Launches Investigation After Bus Arrives At Port Authority 2 Hours Late
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- NJ TRANSIT is trying to figure out why one of its buses arrived at its destination two hours late.
The No. 113 Express from Dunellen was scheduled to arrive at Port Authority Bus Terminal at 7:39 a.m., but the bus didn't get there until 9:22 a.m. Thursday.
The bus left Cranford on schedule but apparently missed the Lincoln Tunnel and wound up on local roads in Secaucus. The driver eventually made her way to the George Washington Bridge.
"Once we got close to the George Washington Bridge, then people started flipping out," Jim Coan said. "She didn't know where the Port Authority was. She had to ask directions from a passenger outside."
When the bus finally did get close to the Port Authority Terminal passengers claim the driver kept going, and refused to let them off.
"We're looking into why this bus was delayed and we've launched an investigation into this incident," spokeswoman Nancy Snyder told 1010 WINS.
Snyder said the agency received a few complaints from passengers.
"We're actively reaching out to our customers and we encourage any customer who may have been on that bus to let us know what happened," she said.
Passenger Jillian Nelson chronicled her experience on Twitter.
"@NJTRANSIT_NBUS on a 113x. Driver, who was trying to avoid traffic to XBL is now completely lost and heading toward GWB!!! Unacceptable!!!!" she wrote at 9:01 a.m.
"@NJTRANSIT_NBUS Rogue113x now lost in Fort Lee. Driver tried to call operator for help and they couldn't. Now driving aimlessly," she wrote 10 minutes later.
Coan told CBS 2's Janelle Burrell that he thought the ride was some kind of joke, but when his ride went past the normal 45-minute trip he knew something was wrong.
"When we passed MetLife Stadium for the second or third time, I knew she had no idea where she was going," he said. "It was so bad that I had to start laughing because there was nothing else I could do."
Snyder said appropriate action will be taken pending the outcome of the investigation.
"We are keenly focused on this investigation," Snyder said.
