NJ TRANSIT Conductor Accused Of Running Ticket Resale Scheme
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- An NJ TRANSIT conductor was charged accused Tuesday of running a ticket scheme at Penn Station.
Joseph Abate, 46, allegedly sold $5,000 worth of unused train tickets to a newsstand vendor inside the station, who would in turn offer the tickets to customers at cut-rate prices, officials said.
A criminal complaint said Abate sold 96 NJ TRANSIT tickets to the newsstand operator on St. Patrick's Day – with a total value more than $1,000, the Star-Ledger reported. On Friday, he allegedly sold 281 tickets to the newsstand operator, worth over $4,000, the newspaper reported.
An informant turned the tickets over to police.
Abate is charged in Manhattan with two counts each of grand larceny and possession of stolen property.
NJ TRANSIT spokesman Nancy Snyder told the newspaper such acts financially penalize customers who legally purchase their tickets.
