NJ Transit Buying 141 Vehicles For Local Programs
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- NJ Transit is buying 141 vehicles that will help provide transportation for thousands of elderly, disabled, low-income and rural residents.
The agency will pay nearly $6.8 million to a Bergen County-based firm for the vans, minivans and minibuses. The cost will mostly be covered by federal stimulus money and various federal grants.
State Transportation Commissioner James Simpson says the vehicles will be distributed to organizations in 20 counties that provide vital local transportation programs.
NJ Transit approved two contracts Friday with Arcola Sales and Service Corp. of Carlstadt. It will pay $6.4 million for 11 vans and 120 minibuses in one deal, while the other calls for spending $361,900 for 10 minivans.
NJ Transit is the nation's largest statewide public transportation system and the third largest transit system in the country.
