At Least 6 People Hurt After Car Crashes Into NJ TRANSIT Bus; Driver Charged
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- At least six people were injured after a car crashed into a NJ TRANSIT bus early Friday morning.
The driver of the car was later charged after he allegedly left the scene, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office.
The crash occurred shortly before 2 a.m. on Central Avenue and South 8th Street in Newark.
The car ran a red light and crashed into the Bloomfield-bound bus, according to NJ TRANSIT.
The 1998 Cadillac Eldorado hit the bus on the driver's side, police said.
The driver of the Cadillac initially fled the scene and was later found at a nearby gas station, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.
The passenger in the car was rushed to University Hospital in critical condition. Five other people were hurt.
Later Friday, Andre Price, 27, of Newark, was charged with aggravated assault by auto and leaving the scene of crash with serious bodily injury, prosecutors said. Price was to be taken to jail after being treated at University Hospital.
Price's bail was set at $75,000 by Superior Court Judge Michael Ravin, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors have obtained a search warrant to take blood from price, but as of Friday evening, he was not charged with driving under the influence.
