NJ TRANSIT Bans Drinking On Concert Trains
MATAWAN, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- NJ TRANSIT is banning all beverages on North Jersey Coast Line trains when concerts are held at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel.
The beverage ban is in effect prior to, during and after PNC Arts Center events, NJ TRANSIT said.
Anybody violating the policy is subject to removal, arrest and fines of up to $1,000, said spokeswoman Nancy Snyder.
"We found this to be a dangerous situation with people being intoxicated on the train traveling to these events," Snyder told 1010 WINS. "We had previous problems with young people drinking on the trains, getting rowdy and in many cases being treated for alcohol poisoning."
NJ TRANSIT Police Chief Christopher Trucillo said the ban mirrors a policy put into effect toward the end of the 2012 concert season.
Police will use discretion when it comes to commuters who bring coffee and water on board, Trucillo said.
The beverage ban starts Friday.
