NJ Teenager Killed In Two Car Collision On Saturday
BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A teenage girl was killed when a Chevy Camaro slammed into a Honda Civic on a northern New Jersey roadway this weekend.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says four other people were hurt in the crash, which occurred around 11:10 p.m. Saturday on Broughton Avenue in Bloomfield
Sixteen-year-old Christina Lembo of Bloomfield, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was taken to a hospital but died there a short time later. Details on the injuries suffered by the four other people were not disclosed, but authorities say none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
Bloomfield police had to shut down a four block section of Broughton Avenue to accommodate several hundred people who showed up to remember Lembo.
Witnesses told CBS 2's Dick Brennan that the driver of the Camaro that killed Lembo was traveling at a high rate of speed.
"He had to be going over ninety to push a car sideways and hit a parked car, you had to be going super fast," said Roberto Nieves.
Lembo was a start soccer player at Bloomfield High School with plans to play in college and eventually become a physical therapist. Classmates were distraught over her death.
"You take an innocent, she was only 16, and she did not deserve this at all," said Maia Tome
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, prosecutors are awaiting the results of blood tests to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
