NJ Pol Charles Mainor: Friend Added 'Gaybirds' To Facebook Post
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — New Jersey politician Charles Mainor has apologized for a Facebook post that referred to the Philadelphia Eagles as "gaybirds" and the Dallas Cowboys as "cowgirls."
Assemblyman Mainor, D-Jersey City, told the Jersey Journal that he wrote only part of the message posted to his wall during Sunday night's game between the Giants and the Green Bay Packers.
The post, which has since been deleted, said "We are not going to just lay down, we come to play. Who the hell do you think we are the DALLAS COWGIRLS OR THOSE GAYBIRDS FROM PHILLY... NO WE ARE THE NEW YORK GIANTS."
Mainor said he wrote most of the post at a party and a friend added the "gaybirds" portion.
"I have to take full responsibility because it was under my name," said Mainor. "I have no excuse, other than me not looking before he did send the post."
The assemblyman said he hoped constituents do not take the comment as meaning he does not support gay rights. Garden State Equality CEO Steven Goldstein defended Mainor, telling the Journal that the post was "an unfortunate misstep."
"I don't believe, from what I know of Assemblyman Mainor, that they reflect any deep prejudice on his part," said Goldstein.
"I have very, very close relatives who are gay," Mainor said. "I have nothing against them. I'm far from that."
