NJ Man Gets 14 Years For Stabbing Estranged Wife
FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) -- A New Jersey man who repeatedly stabbed his estranged wife during a 2009 New Year's Day attack that was overheard by a 911 operator has been sentenced to 14 years in state prison.
Thirty-five-year-old Juan Rojas of Edison must serve nearly 12 years of the sentence imposed Friday before becoming eligible for parole. He also must pay more than $18,000 in restitution to the Victims of Crime Compensation Board, which paid some of the victim's medical bills.
Rojas had pleaded guilty last August to attempted murder and eluding. Prosecutors say Rojas broke into his estranged wife's Freehold Township condominium and stabbed her 19 times, breaking knives during the attack.
He then led police officers on a high-speed pursuit that ended when he surrendered in Perth Amboy.
