NJ Bill Would Allow Illegal Residents To Qualify For In-State Tuition
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey lawmakers are set to consider a bill that would allow people who are in the country illegally to qualify for in-state tuition rates at state colleges and universities.
The Assembly Budget Committee is set to consider the measure Monday. It would take effect beginning in the fall semester.
To be eligible for in-state tuition, a person must have attended a New Jersey high school for at least three years and have a diploma from a state high school or the equivalent.
To qualify, they must also file an affidavit stating they've filed or will file an application to legalize their immigration status as soon as they're eligible to do so.
The bill's sponsor says the measure aims to provide young people with an opportunity for higher education.
