NJ Beach Erosion 'Under Control' Thanks To Forgiving Winter

MONMOUTH BEACH, NJ (WCBS 880) -- If you're heading out to the Jersey shore this holiday weekend, one thing you won't have to worry about is not having enough sand.

The winter of 2009/2010 was brutal for New Jersey beaches as nor'easters pummeled the coast. But this past winter was more forgiving and many beaches are in pretty good shape.

"We had a series of coastal storms accompanied by all that snow from late December to late January, but otherwise the storm track for the most part was to our west," said New Jersey State climatologist David Robinson. "Not the nor'easter type of storms we frequently see throughout the winter and that kept the beach erosion more or less under control."

Erosion still occurred in a few chronic trouble spots like Monmouth Beach and Bradley Beach where a dredging project is in the works.
